What Are Alpine Touring Skis?
Touring skis, also known as backcountry skis, blend elements from alpine, cross-country, telemark, randonnee, and backcountry styles. They offer versatility, making it possible to rely on a single pair of skis for various needs. Touring skis are best suited for more advanced skiers who are familiar with the unpredictable nature of the backcountry.
Ski touring involves traveling both uphill and downhill without removing the skis. The loose heel and wide base of touring skis allow you to explore powder snow in the backcountry. If you prefer skiing on-piste, alpine touring skis can also be used on the groomed slopes of ski resorts.
How to Choose Touring Skis?
Generally, touring skis should be lightweight (approximately 1100 g to 1800 g) and the length should be within 5-10 cm of your height. Heavier skis are better for downhill skiing, offering more stability and speed but requiring more effort for ascents. Lighter skis are ideal for uphill-oriented ski touring. The waist width typically ranges from 82-105 mm for versatile backcountry skis.
What Ski Touring Gear Should I Get?
For alpine ski touring, specialized gear is essential for navigating up and down the mountain. The right equipment ensures you get the most out of your backcountry adventures.
Bindings are crucial in touring gear. Special touring bindings allow you to walk with your skis on by lifting the heel while the toe remains fixed to the ski. You can find alpine touring bindings in our Ski Bindings Selection.
Choosing the right ski boots is also important. Flexible and relatively lightweight boots are advantageous since they allow you to lift the heel for forward walking motions. Our range of Alpine Ski Boots includes specialized touring boots suitable for backcountry skiing.
Other essential touring equipment includes skins and ski poles. Skins, mounted on the base of the skis, prevent sliding backward during ascents. Good climbing skins offer a balance of traction and glide and attach securely to the skis. For ski poles, adjustable ones are recommended. They allow for a long pole during ascents and a shorter pole for descents, or different lengths for traversing the mountain.
Since you will be in the wild, safety equipment like a ski helmet and avalanche gear is necessary. Explore our selection of Ski Protection Gear and venture into the backcountry with peace of mind.
