Marathon skates, often referred to as endurance skates, are inline skates crafted specifically for long-distance skating. In contrast to speed skates, marathon skates are distinguished by a higher cuff, enhancing ankle support on lengthy journeys. These skates are available in both traditional four- and three-wheel setups. With wheels sized at 100mm, 110mm, and 125mm, alongside long frames, these skates are designed for stability at high velocities.

Selecting the Ideal Skates for Long Distances

Several elements should be taken into account when purchasing new inline skates for long distances: the size of the wheels, the boots, and the frames.

For medium to long distances, fitness-oriented skaters often opt for 100mm or 110mm wheels, which aid in maintaining speed while conserving energy. Although 125mm wheels might be perceived as heavier, they are considered the best option for marathon skaters covering very long distances. Your preference will determine whether you choose a soft or hard boot shell. A soft boot offers greater comfort and is well-ventilated, whereas a hard boot typically provides increased stability and control. Long-distance skaters generally favour long frames for improved stability and weight distribution.

Comparing Four-Wheel and Three-Wheel Marathon Skates

As previously indicated, endurance skates come in four- or three-wheel configurations. The chosen wheel setup is entirely dependent on your desired skating experience. Skates with four wheels provide increased stability and improved weight distribution but do not offer the same speed as a three-wheel configuration and cannot accommodate 125mm wheels. Conversely, three-wheel setups tend to be lighter but offer less stability than their four-wheel counterparts.
