BMX Bikes
What Is a BMX Bike?
BMX bikes are easily identifiable due to their thick tires and wide handlebars. They are often smaller than road or mountain bikes to reduce weight and enhance the ability to perform tricks and stunts. Initially created for off-road racing, BMX bikes are designed to be robust and durable to withstand aggressive riding.
The Different Types of BMX Bikes
There are various disciplines within BMX riding. BMX racing is the original form of the sport, where participants aim to navigate a dirt track with ramps and jumps as quickly as possible. Fast-paced and intense, BMX race bikes are specifically built for racing.
Freestyle BMX focuses on performing tricks and stunts. Within freestyle, there are several styles such as Street, Trails, and Flatland. Freestyle bikes come in different styles and are typically made from Chromoly or aluminum. While a 20-inch wheel size is standard, 16-18 inches may be more suitable for younger riders.
Mini BMX is a newer category of BMX bikes. Mini BMX bikes have a wheel diameter of about 10 inches and are notable for their chubby wheels and often vibrant designs. Despite their size, mini BMX bikes are suitable for all BMX riders.
What BMX Bike Should I Get?
Your choice depends on what you intend to do with your BMX. If your aim is to master tricks and spend time at the skate park, then a freestyle setup is ideal. If you enjoy the competitive aspect of the sport, then consider BMX racing. Many people participate in both, and the skills learned in one discipline can often be transferred to another.
Once you have decided on a style, the next step is to select a model that fits you properly. As mentioned, the standard size for BMX bikes is 20-inch wheels, but there are various sizes available to suit different heights and preferences. For more guidance on sizing, we have created a size chart for race BMX bikes and a size chart for freestyle BMX bikes.
